The last time I was in Panama about a year ago you could by a house or condo on a (remote) beach for just over $100,000US. The cost of living in Panama is far lower than the United States, Europe or Canada.  Panama is stable and the United States, and other countries have a vested interested in keeping it that way.... The Panama Canal is a critical passage way for shipping.
