Belize: Medical and health services |
Impressively, Belize is a country that has a concrete and solid foundation when it comes to medical and health services for its inhabitants and visitors. Belize is divided into four regions. Cayo District is found at the Western Region, Orange Walk and Corozal Districts occupy the Northern Region, Stann Creek and Toledo Districts are in the Southern Region while Belize District is within the Central Region. Karl Huesner Memorial Hospital is the recognized national referral hospital in Belize, but a network of 7 district hospitals is spread among these four regions. This network provides the structure governing the medical and health care services and health care delivery all over Belize. The Belize School of Nursing is the widely known institution that provides medical education and training to those who wish to become midwives and nurses in Belize. Medical education and training are mainly focused on caring for the country’s infirm patients. In the infirmary, the elderly and chronically ill patients reside and are taken care of its medical personnel. Even upon closer inspection, the medical infrastructure of Belize is deemed above the Caribbean average. Belize’s medical structure has its limitations, though. Even though it is a country known for its biodiversity, no proper examinations and standards are observed regarding the health and medical clearances of those who wish to enter Belize. Malaria is undeniably a risk so people are advised to have anti-malaria medicine with them especially if they plan to take trips to Belize’ forest areas. Fortunately, Belize presently has seen no incidents of medical endemic diseases.
