Ever wonder why Michael and Lincoln Scoffield from “Prisonbreak” are desperate to go to Panama? Well to start with, it belongs to the region in the Caribbean which is a haven for breathtaking white sand beaches, coral reefs, and completely untouched rainforests and jungles. It’s not just merely an escape from the authorities but an escape to everything. Who wouldn’t go to great lengths to escape to a paradise that feels like heaven on a patch of Earth? The Location: It is primarily located in Central America in the middle of Costa Rica and Colombia, strategically situated at the eastern part of the Isthmus of Panama which connects the Northern and Southern America. In 1999, this region controls the Panama Canal which links the North Atlantic Ocean through the Caribbean Ocean with the North Pacific Ocean. It is composed of nine provinces: Bocas del Toro, Coclé, Colón, Chiriquí, Darién, Herrera, Los Santos, Panamá Veraguas, and two provincial level “comarcas”: Kuna de Madugandí and Kuna de Wargandí, that is a part of the Panamá and Darién provinces. Panama’s Wonders: In their native language Panama simple means “abundance of fish” and because of its geographical location, it has become one of the famous tourist destinations in the world. It has natural hills, distinctive mountains on the west and the impenetrable jungle of Darien Gap which serves as an abode to beautiful creatures that are rare in the world. It’s also a home to different ethnic groups which gives Panama the diverse color of tradition and culture. Although Panama is mostly known to the world for the history of its canal, it also serves as a refuge for travelers, a clandestine honeymoon adventure for newlyweds or simply a great escape that proves to be one of the greatest snorkeling and hiking locations in America. Through the aid of the United States of America, Panama acquired independence from Colombia on November 3, 1903, granting them (U.S.A) the rights of the canal for perpetuity. After Panama has completely separated itself from Colombian rule, representatives of the Republic of Panama signed a Treaty in December 1903 called the “Hay-Bunau Varilla Treaty”, which officially gives the United States of America the right to build and control the Panama Canal which opened in 1914 after it was abandoned in 1902. This is due to the overwhelming problems in health and construction by Ferdinand de Lesseps who attempted to build a canal in the same area.
