What You Won't See in Panama Print E-mail
Sometimes, we have a lot of expectations.  Some of these expectations aren’t always good.  In fact, we’re usually trained to “expect the worst.”  However, there are times when expecting the worst might cause us to lose out on the more enjoyable things in life, like traveling, for instance.

Unjust Thoughts about Panama

Traveling is incredibly fun, especially if you’re going to a wonderful country like Panama.  However, when a country is poorer than their country, people tend to think the worst of it.  They tend to imagine kids snatching their purses, burglars raiding the homes of the unsuspecting tourists, and thugs raping women.  Such thoughts are unkind and they are also detrimental to the country’s economy especially if the country is heavily dependent on tourism.  Such thoughts are also insulting, especially if the expectations are unfounded.  They’re even more insulting if the ones who were expecting the worst actually had worse conditions in their own countries.

Such is the case with Panama.  People suspect that their lives will be in danger when they go there and as a result, they avoid the country like the plague when planning their vacations.  But really, you will be a lot safer in a park in Panama than in New York’s Central Park.

What's Real in Panama

If you actually go there, you might be ashamed to see that Panama is a lot more peaceful than your own neighborhood.  For one thing, you won’t see teenagers with outrageously colored hair and tattooed bodies gathering in circles and smoking pot in the middle of the night while shouting out random curses at random strangers.  In fact, Panama’s teenagers are quite well-behaved.  There won’t be bums littering the streets prophesizing the end of the world while chugging a bottle of cheap vodka.  You won’t see prostitutes baring their flesh in the streets, trying to seduce any man who looks as if he has a bit of cash on him.

While I don’t deny that there are some bad elements in Panama, I do assure you that these bad elements are relatively controllable or manageable.  The police force in Panama is quite competent and is extremely strict when it comes to cases which include drug traffickers and drug users.  Panama has no tolerance for those who engage in drug abuse.  Prostitution is legal but the women are tested regularly for STD’s.  There are some wild drivers here and they sometimes ignore traffic rules and regulations, but they get fined whenever they’re caught.

Panama isn’t a utopian world but neither is it a melting pot of criminals and hoodlums, as some people would have you believe.  You might even find, as some retirees have found, that it’s actually a better place to live in than your old neighborhood.
