Cayman Islands Overview Print E-mail

A tropical paradise around 125 miles south of Cuba and 125 miles west of Jamaica known as the Tortugas, we know today as the Cayman Islands. The Cayman Islands are in actually three islands known as the Grand Cayman Island, the Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman. Grand Cayman Island has an area of around 75 square miles. Cayman Brac and Little Cayman only have around 27 square miles between the two. These two smaller islands are located northeast of Grand Cayman and a visit there will have to be traveled by air. The majority of all financial activities transpire in Georgetown, which is the capital found on Grand Cayman.

The Cayman Islands residents enjoy some of the best weather worldwide. Summer temperatures on average are between 75 degrees Fahrenheit and 85 degrees Fahrenheit. During the winter months, the average temperatures are between 65 degrees Fahrenheit and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Light rain can be expected in the winter while in the summer you can enjoy plenty of sunshine. As seen throughout history, the Cayman Islands along with the eastern Caribbean isles do not see hurricanes.

The official language found in the Cayman Islands in English, which is spoken by most. You may notice as you walk around that the islands are Americanized but have a unique British flair. Such examples include driving on the left side of the street as in Great Britain. If you believe that in Great Britain people are very polite and in American people are very friendly, then here you will be surprised that both of these qualities have been combined.

The standard of living found in the Cayman Islands is the highest found in the Caribbean with the median income over US$50,000, which is one of the highest worldwide. A visit to the Cayman Islands is more than likely the only country in the western hemisphere that will leave you with the impression that the United States is poor in comparison.

Cable and wireless communications are available and are in wonderful condition. The residents of Cayman are considered to be very classy with the highest per capita rate of cellular telephones throughout the world.

The major airlines to the Cayman Islands include American Airlines out of Miami, Florida; Northwest Airlines out of Memphis, Tennessee; and the Cayman Airways out of Houston and various Florida cities. You can find many seasonal tourist carriers that do offer flights to the Cayman Islands.
