WikiLeaks puts the spotlight on government abuse Print E-mail
It is a scary thought when we consider how many times the government has perpetrated lies on us, the law abiding tax paying public. But then that is what governments often do. In defense of the powers that be they do try to protect us from receiving an information overload of minutiae that might cause many of us to remain in bed with the covers firmly pulled up over our heads. Still we have the right to know when it comes to matters of national concern. This is not the same as boldfaced lying to cover up mistakes by our fearless leaders.

Do it in the name of defense

As empowered U.S. leaders continue to harm, torture, imprison, and even murder at their own discretion, the general public has no clue what is happening behind closed doors around the world. Even those who do don’t seem to care enough to expose those who perform mayhem without consideration for laws against such atrocities must be accounted for. Bringing such exploits to light is a job in need of exercising. We can no longer allow our leaders to take away their freedoms purely in the name of defense unless there is proof and that means a court of law must declare that crimes have been committed.

The Executive Branch of the U.S. must be held accountable

We discovered long ago that our leaders cannot always protect the public against those who choose to harm us. September 11, 2001 was probably the most obvious and infamous example of how vulnerable this country (or any other) actually is. Our military knew what was going on, well they sort of knew. But apparently they were powerless to stop what happened before it was too late. Just how badly some particular groups of people actually hate us Americans was not something the general public even wanted to know. But we do have the right to that information and for this reason we need such affiliations as WikiLeaks and others who defy the warmongers who hide behind governmental claims of privacy. Those who kill and otherwise harm our enemy only increase their numbers, mostly by setting the example that Americans are a cruel and unsympathetic lot overall. Being informed is necessary in order to become a civilized nation.

Freedom of Speech was the first and most vital amendment

Having the right to state your mind without fear of being persecuted for your beliefs is one of the most important laws passed by our forefathers. This allows us to have an opinion in matters that are important to us and our country. Being able to “state your own mind” is what separates the United States of America from certain other countries who merely reward their free thinkers by beheading them. Plenty of Americans have fought and died for their right to give their opinions and when we don’t have a say in how our country treats others this violates all that we stand for. In order to keep this country (or any other) free and secure we need to be aware of what’s going on in the name of the law around the world. Each time our military kills innocent people, that is those who have not proven to choose to harm us, we only create more enemies who will do us harm sooner or later. Being informed may scare the hell out of us but we have the right to that information in any case.
